First Time Users: Important Setup Information
Getting Set Up
Explorer, Firefox and Chrome web browsers should work with this web mapping software, but only Internet Explorer and Firefox have been tested by the Division of Forestry. If you are having problems, try a different web browser. Also clear your browsing History.
Turn the Pop-Up Blocker off. The Pop-up blocker will keep the various reports from showing up.Also under the “General” tab of the Internet Options dialog menu, there will be a section titled “Browsing History”. Click on the "Setting" button and specify the option, "Every time I visit the webpage".
When opening, allow the site to complete loading before zooming or opening data files. All yellow data folders on the left hand side should be closed. In Firefox, text in the lower left corner shows “Done” when complete.
If the site fails to open in a reasonable amount of time, close and open a new browser.
On the Alaska state network or fast internet connections, the map should at least have started drawing on your screen within 20 seconds. On dailup internet connections this will be very slow.
If the map does not fill the screen, select the value “full” under Bookmarks” in the lower right corner, or hit the full extent icon
in the upper right corner
When You Get On the Site
To use the Google Earth portion of this site you must first load Google Earth on your computer. To load Google Earth, do a search and follow the directions to load. Both Google Earth and this mapping site are data intensive. Dial-up modems tend to be slow. Google Earth takes advantage of the 3D graphics capabilities standard on most computers. If you are using Google Earth on an older machine, or a notebook computer that does not have 3D graphics capabilities, you may not be able to run the application. The Google Earth client requires certain system configurations in order to run smoothly. Google Earth is avaliable by clicking on the Google Earth KML icon
which will export selected records to Google Earth. A KML file will be generated and will contain both the feature geometry and associated attributes you are currently viewing. Google Earth, if installed, will launch, zoom to, and display the same selection.
Under "Layers" shown on the left hand side, the user has the option to turn on and off layers on the map by clicking on the + sign to open the Directory. Then click in the box to the left of the layer name to turn on the layer. Right clicking on the map layer name will allow you to display additional information about the data, and to zoom to the extent of the layer. The GIS data layers available at each of the Area Office sites is the best data available to State Forestry. Please read the disclaimer on the accuracy and limitations of the data. State Forestry does not guarantee the accuracy of the data, they are an approximation.
